FB: HHC Players Dot List Of State Leaders

It is little surprise that the Hoosier Heritage Conference
has fared so well in football this season. Players from HHC schools are
sprinkled throughout the Isaac’s list of state statistical leaders. It is also
no surprise that most of those individuals are members of the high scoring
Delta, Shelbyville, and Yorktown squads.

The conference boasts several players listed among the state’s
top rushers. They are led by Shelbyville’s Davis Brown who is averaging 123.4
yards per game on the ground. Delta’s Kyle Stevens is right behind with 123.0
per contest. Not to be outdone, Yorktown
places Derek Kundenreich on the list at 114.1 yards per contest.

Wesley Winkle of Yorktown and
Logan Young of Delta appear on the list of top receivers. Both players are
averaging over 65 yards a game. In the passing ranks, Yorktown’s
Jacob Walker is 15th in the state, averaging 184.7 yards per game.

Brown of Shelbyville and Stevens of Delta also appear on the
list of leading scorers. Brown averages 16.7 points a game while Stevens comes
n at 12.2 On the defensive side of the ball; Yorktown’s
Jacob Dungan is among the state’s best, averaging 10.1 tackles per game.

FB: 4A #7 Delta wallops 4A #4 Shelbyville, 63-35, to finish undefeated

From The Shelbyville News

Delta took it all.

The 17-game regular-season winning streak, the 13-game Hoosier Heritage Conference winning streak, the conference traveling trophy and, most importantly, the Hoosier Heritage Conference championship all left McKeand Stadium Friday with the Delta Eagles.

Greg Heban and Teddy Dawson combined to score seven touchdowns, and Delta (9-0, 7-0 HHC) claimed its first HHC title since 2005 with a 63-35 win.

Heban took the game’s opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, leaving the Golden Bears (8-1, 6-1 HHC) stunned.

“We came out a little flat for whatever reason,” Shelbyville coach Pat Parks said. “We gave up the big return then we fumbled.”

Shelbyville’s Kevin Prosch took the Delta kickoff and cut across field. When he tried to turn back into the middle of the field he was hit and fumbled and Delta had possession on the Golden Bears’ 28.

Seven plays later, Dawson scored.

Shelbyville quarterback Kris Skipton’s shovel pass was intercepted on the next possession, and Delta was in business again at midfield.

A 30-yard completion to Heban set up first-and-goal, and it was Heban who finished the drive with a 6-yard run.

Shelbyville’s high-scoring offense had been on the field for less than two minutes, and the scoreboard read 20-0.

There was no catching up from there.

Heban scored on a 12-yard pass from quarterback Brooks Medaris with 29 seconds left in the first half.

A 58-yard pass play from Skipton to Prosch set up a 3-yard touchdown for Brown just before halftime.

A 42-yard touchdown run by Brown on the second play of the second half cut Delta’s lead to 14, and the Golden Bears finally had some momentum.

Heban ended that notion with a 30-yard scoring run just 68 seconds later.

The Golden Bears answered with another quick score – Skipton to Prosch for 44 yards – but that was as close as they would get.

The two teams traded touchdowns again early in the fourth quarter before Heban scored from 39 yards and Dawson added a 68-yard scoring run.

“They are just a force on offense,” Parks said. “They did a very good job of pounding on us pretty good.”

Heban led all rushers with 167 yards; the senior also had 67 yards receiving, the kickoff return for a touchdown and an interception.

Kyle Stevens, who missed last year’s championship game with an injury, ran for 146 yards on 22 carries as the Eagles rolled up 404 yards of rushing.

“Their offensive line really came off the ball and got them going,” Parks said.

Medaris threw for 113 yards.

Brown led the Golden Bears with 89 yards rushing. Skipton was 6-of-12 passing for 161 yards.

Sectional play begins next week, and Shelbyville hosts Franklin County at 7 p.m.

There will be no mourning period, according to Parks.

“It’s over,” Parks said. “We have to look forward. Right now, it’s Franklin County time.”

FB: Fast Start Propels Delta Past Shelbyville In HHC Showdown

The showdown between 4A #5 Delta and 4A#7 Shelbyville had
been anticipated for weeks. It took less than twelve minutes for Delta to end
much of the suspense. In fact, it really took less than fifteen seconds. The
Eagles’ Greg Heban returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown and
Delta never looked bacon their way to a 63-35 victory. The Eagles dominated the
first half and built a 26-0 lead before the Golden Bears dented the scoreboard
just before halftime.

The second half was an offensive explosion for both teams.
Shelbyville closed to within 14 points in the third quarter, but in the end
could not muster any defensive stands against the high powered eagles. On the
evening, Delta amassed an unbelievable 411 yards rushing. Nearly 200 of those
came from Heban who added touchdown runs of 30 and 39 yards to his opening
heroics.

With the win, Delta claims the outright HHC championship.
The Eagles capped an undefeated regular season. Shelbyville ends the regular
season at 8-1, 6-1 in the HH..

BSOC: Rushville Downs League Foe Shelbyville For Sectional Title

Reprinted Coutesy of:
Rushville Republican

Aaron Kirchoff

For the first time in program history, the
Lions held the soccer sectional championship trophy above their heads.
Rushville avenged an earlier season loss to the Shelbyville Golden
Bears by taking the sectional title game 2-1 Saturday.

The Lions advance to the regional, which
they will host, and face another Hoosier Heritage Conference foe in the
New Palestine Dragons at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Roncalli and New Castle will
open the regional at 5 p.m. The championship is set for Saturday.

The Golden Bears defeated the Lions 3-1
during the season at Shelbyville, but right from the start, Saturday’s
title match-up had a different feel. The Lions put constant offensive
pressure on the Bears.

The Lions had two shots at goal in the first six minutes.

At the 31:20 mark of the first half, Austin
Seals fired a shot that hit off the cross bar. Adam Wagner had the
follow shot, but Shelbyville’s Michael Parks made the save.

About six minutes later, Shelbyville’s Josh Crafton hit a chip shot and Rushville keeper C.J. West made the save.

With 14 minutes to play in the first half,
Eric Wagner’s direct kick was again saved by Parks. Six minutes later,
a Rushville corner kick found Dan Schilling and his shot slipped just
past the far post.

Both teams had opportunities, but the game was scoreless at the half.

Just over one minute into the second half,
the ball was loose in front of the Golden Bears’ goal. Schilling got a
shot off, but Parks made the diving stop and then grabbed the ball
while on the ground.

With 33:35 to play in the game, the ball
was crossed and Seals knocked the ball past a diving Parks to put the
Lions on the board first 1-0.

Both teams again had chances to score, but
could not find the net. That was until the 18:45 mark. Scott McMahan
ran down a through ball, collected it and then blasted the ball into
the net for a 2-0 Rushville lead.

Rushville held the two goal lead until a penalty kick at the 6:44 mark by Austin Nedderman cut the lead to 2-1.

The final six minutes were played at a
frantic pace as the Golden Bears tried everything to get the game
evening goal, but the Lions’ defense did not allow it and the Lions
rushed the field for the first time as sectional champs.

Skipton Leads Shelbyville Rout Of New Palestine

The weather turned chilly this week. The Golden Bears stayed hot.

Class
4A No. 7-ranked Shelbyville ran its regular-season winning streak to 16
games with a 42-14 win over New Palestine Friday at McKeand Stadium in
Shelbyville.

The Golden Bears (7-0, 5-0 HHC) got off to another quick start, scoring on their first four possessions.

“That
was the name of the game again tonight,” Shelbyville coach Pat Parks
said. “I thought we did a nice job, not really knowing what to expect
from New Palestine.”

David Brown finished off three drives with
scoring runs of one, one and 18 yards, and Kris Skipton raced 95 yards
for the fourth score after the defense denied New Palestine (2-5, 1-4
HHC) four straight times inside the 10-yard line.

“That was a
big turnaround,” Parks said. “They could have got one in and didn’t.
Then we get one, so you’re looking at a 14-point swing.”

Shelbyville led 14-0 before the Dragons started driving from their own 35. Seven plays later, they had first-and-goal at the 5.

The
Golden Bears defense stuffed two runs and broke up a pass to set up
fourth down. New Palestine quarterback Cary Albrecht tried to spread
the field then run it in himself but was dragged down on the 5.

Skipton,
who had a long touchdown run against Mount Vernon called back because
of an inadvertent whistle, took the next snap, faked to Brown then
curled around the left side of the line and outran the New Palestine
defense to the end zone to make it 21-0.

Wheels a turnin’
“That
was just a straight run for me with a fake to David (Brown),” Skipton
said. “David does a great job with the fake. (Kevin) Prosch made a
great block on the linebacker or the corner, I don’t remember which
one, and I just outran everyone else.”

Skipton’s “wheels” will never be confused for Brown’s, but he led the Golden Bears Friday with 151 yards on just nine carries.

New Palestine scored two touchdowns inside the final seven minutes of the second half.

After Tommy Armstrong’s 3-yard touchdown, Brown took the kickoff 92 yards for his fourth touchdown of the game.

Brown finished the game with 81 yards rushing on 17 attempts. Patrick Ellis had 98 yards on eight carries.

Just three teams are left in the HHC with a chance to claim the 2008 title.

Class
4A No. 5-ranked Delta (7-0, 5-0 HHC) stayed undefeated with a 44-26 win
over Rushville Friday. And Class 3A No. 7-ranked Yorktown (6-1, 4-1
HHC) defeated Anderson Highland 21-14 in a nonconference game.

The
Golden Bears have won their five conference games by an average of 36.2
points. The road should get tougher next week at Yorktown.

“We
have to get back to reality this week and get back to the preparation,”
Parks said. “We know we’re going to be challenged. It’s time to see
where we’re at.”
