COLUMBUS – Class was in session for Shelbyville Saturday at Columbus North.

For
11 minutes, the Golden Bears traded baskets with the bigger Bull Dogs.
Then a momentary lapse in concentration gave Columbus North all the
edge it needed.

Shelbyville was outscored 15-4 over the final
five minutes of the second quarter and the Bull Dogs never relinquished
their double-digit lead in a 54-36 victory.

“I don’t know if we
relaxed or just aren’t used to being in that situation with a good
team,” Shelbyville coach Stacie Cepin said. “I think they were more
stunned than anything else. That hurt us because they created some
opportunities for themselves to score and we relaxed a little bit.”

Freshman Courtney Larson hit back-to-back 17 footers to give Columbus North a 19-14 lead.

After
a Chelsea Weaver free throw for Shelbyville, the Bull Dogs scored the
next nine points, six by 6-foot senior Sydney Mitchell, to push the
lead to 28-15.

A slow start to the third quarter, five turnovers early, put Shelbyville in a hole.

A
7-0 run by Columbus North bolstered the lead to 18 points midway
through the third quarter ,and Shelbyville never got closer than 12 the
rest of way.

“We need to clean up our turnovers,” Cepin said.
“We’ve done well the first two games of the year but we turned it over
too many times this game.”

Shelbyville finished with 20 turnovers, nine in the third quarter.

“And they outrebounded us,” Cepin continued. “It’s hard for us to win if we’re not on the boards.”

Columbus North won the rebounding battle, 28-22. Mitchell and fellow six-footer Andrea Behling each had six.

Weaver, Eryn Hopper and Lesley Sammons each had five rebounds for Shelbyville (0-3).

Mitchell led all scorers in the game with 10 points. Behling and Larson both had nine.

Larson filled the stat sheet with five rebounds, five assists and six steals.

Weaver led Shelbyville with nine points. Sammons and freshman Jordan Wise each had seven.

Shelbyville was 10-of-36 from the field (28 percent) but a solid 14-of-19 from the free-throw line (74 percent).

“We’re
not a great shooting percentage team,” Cepin said, “but what we are
doing is, once the shot is going up we’re getting in there and getting
offensive rebounds and getting second chances and getting to the
free-throw line. If we can keep doing that, we’ll stay in games.”

Shelbyville started two sophomores and a freshman, and all played significant minutes Saturday.

“Right
now, it’s like going to basketball class for a lot of these younger
kids,” Cepin said. “They’re learning a lot and starting to realize that
they can step up and play this role. We have quite a few kids learning
how important they are to this team.”

Shelbyville’s junior varsity team lost to Columbus North 56-13.

GSW: Shelbyville regional qualifier Smith helps lead team to 2-1 start

By
Jeff Brown

Shelbyville
News

Megan
Smith didn’t get to work on her diving in the off-season as much as she would
have liked. It’s been hard to tell.

The
Shelbyville senior posted a personal best score of 176.95 in the team’s first
dual meet of the season and won a three-team meet with Connersville and
Rushville on Tuesday.

A
regional qualifier as a junior, Smith has loftier goals this season.

“This
year, I want to win sectionals, go on to regionals and advance even
farther,” Smith said.

Smith
finished third at the Franklin Central Sectional behind a pair of seniors. She
was in second place after the semifinal round.

Needing
a top-eight finish to advance to the State Finals, Smith finished 15th at the
Brownsburg Regional.

“That
was quite an experience,” Smith said of her first regional appearance.
“There were some really good divers. They dive year-round, and I can’t do
that because I have other sports.”

Smith is
an all-county soccer player who also competes on Shelbyville’s gymnastics and
track and field teams.

Smith is
excited to take on a new role this season – teacher.

Katelynn
Day and Kailyn Jonas are diving this season with little experience, giving the
senior a chance to pass on her knowledge to the next wave of competitors.

“We
have a diving team this year, and that’s awesome,” Smith said. “I am
really excited to be more of a coach now and a friend.”

Head
coach Sharon Orem begins her third season with a 20-member program.

“This
is a building year because of our experience level,” Orem said. “I
see a lot of positives going on right now. It’s still very early in the season,
but this team has a great attitude. They really want to work. They don’t
complain. They ask questions, wanting to know how to get better.”

Freshmen
Ashley Nolley (individual medley, backstroke) and Kaelie Hauck (freestyle
sprinter) have been competitive from the first day of practice and already have
helped produce two relay wins.

There is
a new unit of breaststrokers this season that includes Hannah Smock (won
season-opening 100-yard breaststroke against Greensburg); Lina Knorr and Dunja
Mokry (both German exchange students); and Erica Thomas.

Liz
Fleming and Gabby Reed are the Golden Bears’ top distance swimmers. Both are
strong in relay events as well.

Nolley
and Stephanie Munger are the top backstrokers, with versatile swimmers like Ai
Kadota and Katie Preilis also seeing time in the discipline.

Breanna
Miller may see some time as a butterfly swimmer along with Hauck.

Michelle
Mazonas is another versatile swimmer working in at the middle-distance events
and relays.

Ashley
Lux and Autumn Gahimer are freestyle sprinters. April Couderc will swim
freestyle, and Kristina Campbell can help in the individual medley.

Shelbyville
hosts the Shelby Relays on Dec. 13.

The
Hoosier Heritage Conference Meet is at New Palestine on Jan. 17.

Shelbyville
competes in the Franklin Central Sectional on Feb. 19 along with 12 other
programs.

GBB: Yorktown victorious in first conference game

The Shelbyville News
Staff Report

The
Shelbyville girls’ basketball team opened a new season at Yorktown Saturday,
but it suffered from the same offensive woes as last season.

Yorktown
beat the visiting Golden Bears 61-37. It was Shelbyville’s seventh sub-40
performance in its last eight games dating back to last year.

“We
just didn’t score,” Shelbyville coach Stacie Cepin said. “A lot of
missed shots. A lot of missed opportunities. We missed a lot of layups.”

Sophomore
guard Molly Beard and sophomore center Jill Hopper scored 13 points each to
lead the Tigers (2-0, 1-0 Hoosier Heritage Conference). Yorktown is off to its
first 2-0 start since 2000-2001.

Beard
made four 3-pointers.

“We
were out of sync to start the game,” Cepin said. “(Yorktown) had a
game under its belt and it looked like they were ready to play.”

Chelsea
Weaver (11 points), Bailee Runnebohm (eight points) and Caitlin Mills (eight
points) led Shelbyville, which will host Greensburg Tuesday in the Pirates’
season opener.

FB: Shelbyville’s great season comes to a close

Jeff Brown
Shelbyville News Sports Editor

ST. LEON – East Central took advantage of every break Shelbyville provided, and one by the officials.

East Central quarterback Zach Meiners rushed for a touchdown and threw for two more to lead the Trojans to a 38-28 victory over the Golden Bears Friday at Trojan Field in St. Leon.

East Central (10-1) moves on to the sectional championship game next Friday at top-ranked Columbus East (11-0), a 42-6 winner over Madison.

Shelbyville (9-2) says goodbye to a group of seniors that have helped the program go 20-3 over the last two seasons.

“We have a good senior group coming back that have learned from these seniors,” Shelbyville head coach Pat Parks said. “I think that will carry on just like it has for the last seven years. That’s a real testament to the senior leadership that’s been in front and shows the way, and the others seem to follow.”

David Brown, who will play at Ball State next year, ran for 124 yards and set the program record for most touchdowns in a season (30) and most points scored in a season (180).

Kris Skipton threw a career-high 32 passes without an interception and rushed for a touchdown in his final game.

Michael Hardesty, an all-conference lineman in 2007, helped the Golden Bears rush for more than 7,000 yards the last two seasons.

Robert Cox ran his team-leading quarterback sack total to 12.

And Brett Durphey finished an all-state caliber season at linebacker.

There are more seniors. All disappointed in the outcome but all responsible for the program’s ranking among the state’s elite.

“I’m not complaining,” Parks said about the 20-3 mark the last two seasons. “It’s tough. We wanted to get that sectional championship, and we know we’re capable of it. Now we just have to go back to work.”

Shelbyville needs to shore up its special teams play that has trouble recovering onside kicks and allowing touchdown runs at the most inopportune times.

After stalling out on its first drive Friday, Michael Parks’ 40-yard punt was returned 65 yards by Adam Rauch.

One play later, Meiners connected with Jon Hensley on an 11-yard touchdown pass.

Shelbyville recovered with a 19-play, 79-yard scoring drive.

The two teams traded touchdowns after that, and a Garrett Rauch 36-yard field goal just before halftime gave East Central a 17-14 lead at the break.

Rather than take control of the game, Shelbyville allowed Adam Rauch to take the opening kickoff of the second half 72 yards for a touchdown.

Brown scored his 30th touchdown of the season on a 90-yard burst two possessions later.

East Central’s next drive ended in controversy.

After converting a fourth-and-three by drawing Shelbyville offside, Meiners completed a 35-yard pass to Zach Bley, who appeared to throw down his Shelbyville defender then catch the pass for a touchdown.

“I thought (Bley) had his hands on him and threw him on the ground and came back to get the ball,” Parks said. “It was one of those calls that didn’t go our way.”

Jesse Caldwell added the extra point while Parks barked in the ear of the official who didn’t make the call.

With Shelbyville rattled, Garrett Rauch delivered a bouncing onside kick that the Golden Bears failed to recover.

The Trojans used a fake punt to keep the ensuing drive alive and a steady dose of Greg Sykes to move the ball downfield.

R.J. Thomas finished off the scoring drive with a two-yard run to open the fourth quarter.

“We talk about the effort plays, and there we gave up two big special teams plays that led to 14 points,” Parks said. “There we were again, battling out of it against a good football team.”

The Golden Bears put together an 80-yard scoring drive culminated by Skipton’s 1-yard dive with 20 seconds left to close out the scoring.
