BB: 3A #15 Delta downs Hoosier Heritage foe Shelbyville, 52-29

By Jeff Hodge
Contributing Writer

SHELBYVILLE – As the boys basketball season winds down, so does the storied career of retiring Shelbyville coach Harry Larrabee.

In the first game played in the state’s now-last domed high school structure, Larrabee had seven points and six assists as a sophomore in the Golden Bears’ 77-70 December 1967 win over Richmond. That started an Indiana All-Star career that took Larrabee to many storied arenas as both a player and coach, including playing at Pauley Pavilion and coaching at Rupp Arena.

On Feb. 20, Larrabee was back in what’s now William L. Garrett Gymnasium for one of the last times as the Golden Bears played host to Hoosier Heritage Conference for Delta.

The Class 3A No. 15 visitor was not very gracious. The Eagles (15-4 overall, 6-1 in conference play) shot 48 percent (24 of 50) while holding the Golden Bears to just 31 percent (12 of 38), using a suffocating defense to make it nearly impossible for the Golden Bears to get any good looks at the bucket in a 52-29 win.

Larrabee’s Golden Bears (9-9, 3-3) have been struggling since mid-December to get out of the 40s, and they hit a season low with 29 points tonight. Even the two junior varsity teams that played prior to this game scored more points than Shelbyville.

Delta was led by all-everything junior Logan Young, who had a game-high 18 points. Senior Skyler Case added 11 points for the Eagles, who remain a half-game up on 3A sixth-ranked Mt. Vernon (Fortville) in league play and who travel Feb. 24 at Wapahani (15-2).

Shelbyville was led by senior guard Garrett Abner, who had to work to get free for any kind of look at the bucket in scoring 17 points and grabbing five rebounds. The Golden Bears will host New Palestine (5-12) Feb. 21 in what will be Larrabee’s final home hurrah unless Shelbyville can advance to the regional round of the state tournament, where one of four 3A sites will be hosted by the Golden Bears.

W: Hoosier Heritage has big day at individual wrestling regionals

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

The Hoosier
Heritage Conference had a huge day during the individual regionals held across
central Indiana on Saturday. All eight teams in the league advanced at least
two wrestlers to semi-state competition. In all, the HHC advanced 37 grapplers
and crowned seven regional champions.

Yorktown led
the way for the HHC, advancing ten wrestlers and claiming four champions at the
Jay County Regional. Rushville advanced five through the Richmond Regional with
one champion while Pendleton Heights had the identical performance at their own
regional site. New Palestine advanced five wrestlers but had no champions at
the Perry Meridian Regional. Shelbyville was next in line. The Golden Bears
advanced four wrestlers through at Perry Meridian. Greenfield-Central pushed
three people through at Perry, including one champion. Mount Vernon advanced
three to semi-state, but had no champions. Finally, Delta pushed two grapplers
through to semi-state out of the Jay County site.

Here is a
list of the HHC Regional Champions:

GBB: Hoosier Authority predicts three HHC teams will win sectional crowns

Mike McGraw

Hoosier Authority

It is time
to take a look at the pairings for sectionals which start this week, and the
prospects for Hoosier Heritage Conference teams. Two of the league’s clubs,
Pendleton Heights and Greenfield-Central, compete in 4A. The remaining six
teams will tangle in 3A competition.

Both the
Arabians and Cougars have to be happy with their draws in the Connersville
sectional. Pendleton Heights will get things started Tuesday evening against
New Castle. The Arabians easily handled the Trojans in the season opener,
52-41. Greenfield-Central will open Wednesday night versus a Richmond team that
has won only three games all season. Pendleton Heights would likely see host
Connersville in the semi-finals and that could be a challenge. Greenfield would
face the winner of Anderson and Muncie Central. Look for this to be an all HHC
final with Pendleton Heights being the clear favorite.

Four HHC
teams are in the 3A New Palestine Sectional. Three of those squads are very
happy. That is because the two titans in the field, Rushville and Hamilton heights,
drew each other in opening round action on Tuesday night. That means the rest of
the field will only have to beat one of them along the trail. The real winner
in the draw was New Palestine. The Dragons drew a struggling Shelbyville squad
in the short half of the bracket. Mount Vermin faces whoever wins the big
battle on Tuesday. The bottom line is this. No matter how the draw breaks out,
Rushville is absolutely the team to beat in this field.

Yorktown and
Delta will be in action at the Mississinewa Sectional. It is a wide open
affair. Yorktown has the best record in the field, but the Tigers open against
the host Indians and that is never easy. Delta is in the bye bracket and will
face the winner of that game. 13-6 Blackford got the best of it in the draw.
The Bruins face a subpar Muncie South squad and then have Eastbrook in the semi-finals.
Look for this to be a Yorktown-Blackford title contest. I will call for the
Tigers to emerge as champion.

GBB: Disasterous first quarter dooms Shelbyville in loss to Franklin

Shelbyville’s 11-day break between games lasted an extra 16 minutes.

A
veteran Franklin squad hit 12 of its first 13 shots to build a 32-2
lead after one quarter Wednesday at Garrett Gymnasium in Shelbyville
and coasted to an 80-38 victory.

The Lady Golden Bears (1-17)
had little time to prepare since its last game on Jan. 24 at Delta.
With snow blanketing the area, even practicing has been difficult. And
when the Bears took the court Wednesday, they looked rusty against a
Franklin squad playing its final game of the regular season.

“They
were definitely ready to play,” Shelbyville coach Stacie Cepin said.
“It showed some of their maturity. They didn’t back down, and they
attacked us from the get-go.”

Cepin burned two timeouts within
the first four minutes of the game trying to get her team to settle in,
but the Lady Grizzly Cubs (14-6) kept knocking down shots.

Franklin led 9-0 before Caitlin Mills scored on an offensive rebound for Shelbyville. Franklin’s next 23 points went unanswered.

Franklin
freshman guard Shelby Parmer outscored Shelbyville in the second
quarter 9-6 to help her team take a 45-8 lead into halftime.

As the Bears have done on several occasions this year, they tend to relax when the game is already decided.

And in the third quarter against Franklin’s starting five. Shelbyville showed up.

Chelsea Weaver had seven of her game-high 15 points in the third quarter as Shelbyville outscored Franklin 16-11.

“When
we take care of the basketball, be aggressive and go to the hole and
knock down some shots… that’s the difference,” Cepin said. “I don’t
care how they’re playing us. We have to have that fire the whole game.
I hope we learn from that. There is no excuse. I don’t care how many
days we had off.”

All 13 Franklin players scored in the win led
by Lindsay Vandivier and Chelsea Bujarsky getting 14. No other Lady
Grizzly Cub scored in double digits in a balanced effort.

Franklin shot 80 percent from the field in the first quarter and finished the game at 52 percent.

After a 4-of-18 first-half performance, Shelbyville finished the game shooting 40 percent.

Despite
having one more home game Friday against Triton Central, Shelbyville
honored its three seniors prior to the start of the varsity game.

Bailee
Runnebohm and Kaitlan Hudson both started against Franklin while Lesley
Sammons was in uniform despite still recovering from a broken ankle
suffered in mid-December.

Sammons could return to the court at
the New Palestine Sectional on Feb. 13. Her physical presence on the
court has been sorely missed this season.

“She is probably the
strongest kid we have on the team,” Cepin said. “Right now, it’s one
day at a time. I know she wants to play. Being a senior, this is it.”

Franklin won the junior varsity game, 37-19. Natasha Palmer led Shelbyville (3-14) with eight points.

GYM: Shelbyville tops Rushville

Rushville Republican

The Lady Lions gymnastics
squad competed in front of the home crowd for the first time this
season and despite a couple of injuries, were able to finish second in
the three-team meet.

Shelbyville won the team title with 91.35 with the Lady Lions second at 85.6 and Triton Central third at 51.15.

“The girls did pretty well when you take
into account that they missed almost a week of practice due to last
week’s weather. That along with the first home meet jitters kind of led
to a few more beam falls than we are accustomed to,” RCHS head coach
Karen Day noted. “We also suffered a couple of injuries early that took
out senior Sarah Niedenthal after two events and freshman Kristiann
Maggard, who injured her ankle during timed warm ups. We really missed
both girls and hope to have them back soon.”

Rushville started on the uneven bars and Niedenthal took third with 7.05 and Ashley Murphy was fourth with 7.00.

On the vault, Niedenthal finished second with 8.4 followed by Murphy third 8.3 and Mariah Cain fifth 8.25.

Hannah Lukens took second place on the balance beam with a 7.5.

On the floor exercise, Hannah Orme was second with 7.5 followed by Samantha Bostic fifth with 7.3 and Murphy sixth with 7.25.

Murphy finished fourth overall in the all-around competition with 28.6.

Rushville travels to Morristown Thursday
for a three-way meet with the Lady Yellow Jackets and Decatur Central.
The Lady Lions then host the 8-team invitational in the RCHS gym
addition Saturday.
